More than $4million of road upgrades across The City of Greater Bendigo are complete, thanks to the latest round of the federal government’s Roads to Recovery Program.
Federal Member for Bendigo, Lisa Chesters has called for further investment from the federal government whilst detailing the local works today.
“Bendigo drivers, passengers and pedestrians will now be safer thanks to a number of upgrades across the region,” Chesters said.
“Some projects are being finalised and will be completed in the coming months.”
“These works are important for improving safety, as well as boosting economic and social outcomes in the region, but the current investment is not enough to upgrade all of the roads that need attention.”
The most significant spend was $1.49million to upgrade Patas Road between Golf Links Road and Homer Beacon Road in Maiden Gully.
“Maiden Gully is a huge growth area of Bendigo and this road directly links people to Marist College – it’s important all users are travelling on safe and well-maintained surfaces,” Chesters said.
“I recognise there are many more roads across the region in need of maintenance and upgrades and encourage the Morrison Government increase funding to the program.
“The funding is welcome, but more is needed.
“Road safety is one of the key issues that is raised with me by locals.
“The federal government has a major role to play in supporting councils to ensure our road network is safe.”
The Roads to Recovery Program is a bipartisan programme that has existed since first announced in 2000.
It’s specifically focused on the maintenance of the nation's local roads network.
The funding is allocated to local councils who then selected road projects across the council area.
