Applications for community heritage grants now open

The Gillard Government’s Your Community Heritage program is helping conserve Australia’s nationally significant historic sites and Federal candidate for Bendigo, Lisa Chesters, is encouraging funding applications from groups throughout Central Victoria.

Ms Chesters said in 2012-13, Your Community Heritage is offering more than $7.4 million to help preserve community heritage and funding of up to $500,000 is available for individual projects.

“The Your Community Heritage program is a new approach to protecting Australia’s heritage.”

“The program recognises our heritage is about individual communities, in regional Australia, small towns or in multicultural communities, not just well-known historic places such as those on the World Heritage List.”

Your Community Heritage provides funding to help protect and conserve significant historic sites:
• to help the recovery of historic sites affected by natural disasters;
• to honour eminent Australians who have made a significant contribution to our nation;
• to help communities to tell their heritage stories; and
• to enhance communities engagement with their own heritage through celebrations and events.

Ms Chesters said last year, 235 community groups, heritage organisations, historical societies, councils and government bodies, including several in Central Victoria, received support.

“I encourage any groups interested in the protection of our heritage in Central Victoria to apply for funding.”

Applications close on Thursday 21 March 2013 and further information is available at www.environment.gov.au/heritage/programs/ych
