Bendigo Public School students left out and left behind

Labor candidate for Bendigo, Lisa Chesters, has today called on the State Liberal government to sign up to the Federal Labor government's Better Schools Plan so that Bendigo and Central Victorian public schools do not miss out on urgently needed funding.

"Right now, the only students and schools in our region who will not benefit from the $9.4 billion Federal Labor Government's Better Schools Plan are our local public schools."

"It's simply not fair that these students and their schools miss out. Every child no matter where they live or what their parents earn deserves a decent education for the best start in life."

Yesterday's announcement that the Federal Government and the National Catholic Education Commission (NCEC) have reached a historic funding agreement comes just weeks after an agreement was reached with the Independent Schools.

“This agreement will see Bendigo and Central Victorian Catholic schools share in increased national funding of approximately $1.6 billion.”

The agreement reached with the Independent Schools Council of Australia earlier this month means that local schools like Girton Grammar will also have their funding increased.

"Federal Labor’s Better Schools Plan will ensure that every Australian child, irrespective of where they live, which school they attend or their family background, gets the best possible education. It will mean more individual attention for students who need it most."

The Federal Government has already extended the deadline for the Victorian Government to sign up to the Better Schools Plan.

"My message on behalf of students, their families and our local public schools is simple: Denis Napthine, it's time to sign!"
