Chesters congratulates Bendigo's Local Sporting Champions

Federal Member for Bendigo Lisa Chesters today presented awards to two sporting teams and 16 individuals who will share in $14,000 from the Australian Government’s Local Sporting Champions program.

In a ceremony at Weeroona College, students were presented with certificates for a wide range of sports including hockey, athletics, swimming, baseball, tenpin bowling & rowing.

“There are many talented young men and women in our region competing in state & national sporting competitions and I know how difficult it can be for families to meet the costs of participation.

“That’s why these grants of $500 per individual and $3,000 for teams have been provided.  These grants help meet the costs of participating in sporting events including for equipment, uniforms, travel and accommodation” Ms Chesters said.

“It’s fantastic that the male and female Weeroona College basketball teams are now able to compete at the Australian Schools Championships in Canberra.  The $3,000 boost per team will go a long way towards travel and other costs incurred.”

Applications for grants can be made by either individuals or teams at any time throughout the year, either by visiting www.ausport.gov.au/champions or by contacting Lisa’s office directly on 5443 9055.
