Chesters standing up for jobs in Education

Federal member for Bendigo Lisa Chesters today called on the La Trobe University leadership to speak out against the Federal Liberal Government cuts to universities.

"I understand the University is concerned about their long term budget and viability. That's why they are pushing ahead with their "Future Ready" package.

"Then why the silence on the Abbott Government's plan to reduce government funding for undergraduate students by 20%?

"It's an outrageous cut and attack on regional universities and their students.

“Now more than ever the Universities leadership needs to provide certainty.

"I am calling on the Vice Chancellor to speak out against the Federal Liberal Government cuts to universities and guarantee saving as many jobs as he can for our local Bendigo campus.

"In recent times there has been public condemnation of the Federal Liberal Government's proposed fee deregulation plan.

"Minister for Education, Christopher Pyne,  is using the deregulation debate to distract from his plan to reduce government funding for undergraduate students by one fifth and allow fees to treble.

"The simplest solution to universities’ budget concerns is for the Abbott Government to immediately drop its plan to strip universities of 20 per cent of their funding.

"La Trobe University Bendigo is a great campus and I believe it has the potential to become the main Latrobe University campus

"I stand with academics, staff and their union calling for the University to guarantee to save as many Bendigo jobs as they can.
