With the Women’s National Basketball League (WNBL) season just around the corner, Federal Member for Bendigo Lisa Chesters MP, is hosting a fundraiser lunch to support the Bendigo Spirit.
“This fundraiser is about showing our support for the Spirit season 2016-17.
“Whether it’s for players’ wages, coaching or travel, financially it can be a real struggle to find adequate funding in women’s sport.
“This team is a real asset to our city and attending this fundraiser is an easy way for people to get behind the Bendigo Spirit,” said Ms Chesters.
Professional women’s sport took a big hit when the ABC decided they could no longer support the televising of the WNBL.
“For regional based teams like Bendigo Spirit, losing that national broadcast has had a financial impact.
"This event is also a chance for Bendigo to show its support for Women in Basketball and women's professional sport.
"Gender pay equality is a long way off in professional sport including in Australia's major Basketball leagues. Women basketball players are paid much less than their male counterparts,” said Ms Chesters.
Ms Chesters said she was proud to be hosting this fundraiser. Spirit Star Kelsey Griffin will be the keynote speaker at the event, with Bendigo Spirit number one ticket holder, Jacinta Allan MP, also in attendance.
“Every dollar raised on the day will go directly to the Spirit so I really hope the Bendigo community can support this event,” said Ms Chesters.
