Federal Member for Bendigo, Lisa Chesters MP has welcomed today's Federal Government Bendigo Dragons funding announcement and thanks the community for their efforts.
"Finally! Finally, the Federal Liberal Government has come on board and joined Federal Labor in committing vital funding for Bendigo's new dragon.
"However, I am disappointed it's not dollar for dollar matching to Federal Labor's 2016 election commitment. Before the last Federal election, I and Federal Labor committed $400,000 for Bendigo Dragons and the Golden Dragon Museum.
"I want to acknowledge and thank the local community campaign. I am so pleased after countless demand letters, speeches, media and meetings that the Federal Liberal Government has committed funding for our new dragon.
"Frankly, it should not have taken so long for the Liberal Federal Government to commit to our much loved iconic Bendigo dragons.
"The fact it has taken so long for the Liberal Government to match Federal Labor demonstrates how out of touch the Liberals are with Bendigo and Central Victoria.
“Bendigo’s dragons are a crucial part of the Bendigo community’s sense of spirit and character. The traditions of the Bendigo Chinese community have become an important part of Bendigo’s heritage and sense of identity and it’s vital this continues into the future.
“The dragons not only have a special place in the Bendigo community, but also hold cultural significance for Australia. Each year Sun Loong is the major highlight of the Easter Festival’s gala street parade with generations of local families and visitors lining the streets each and every year,” said Ms Chesters.
