Last Friday a fundraiser lunch raised close to $13,000 with Bendigo business, community and sporting leaders coming together to help kick start the 2016 season for the Bendigo Women's Football team, Bendigo Thunder.
Number one ticket holder of the club, Lisa Chesters MP, hosted the fundraising event at La Piazza last Friday and was thrilled at what was achieved for the club.
Ms Chesters said she was very proud to host the first fundraiser of the year for Bendigo’s only senior women’s Australian Rules Football team.
"The event was a great kick off for season 2016 and it was great to see some new faces come along and find out what women's football is about,” Ms Chesters said.
"There has never been a better time to get involved with women’s footy, as participation numbers increase and the AFL looks to launch a National Women’s League in 2017.
"It is really important we as a city we continue to get behind the Bendigo Thunder. This team is a real asset to our city.
"Women's footy is getting bigger and better every year and this is a really good opportunity for people who are not yet involved to jump on board with Bendigo's only senior women's football team.
Funds raised on the day will go towards players and the club. Some of the players travel long distances to play for the Thunder and player registration is expensive.
