While welcoming the announcement of the Federal election date of 14th September, Labor candidate for Bendigo, Lisa Chesters, spoke about the Gillard Labor governments’ achievements in Bendigo.
“Labor has a proud record of strong economic management, with low unemployment, contained inflation and low interest rates, which benefits every home buyer and their family in the electorate,” Ms Chesters said.
“Importantly, Labor is looking to the future with policies for a sustainable Australia to protect our children’s future.”
“With a focus on services that matter to the whole community, Labor is continuing to invest in education, healthcare and other essential government services. Labor has invested over $182 million to upgrade facilities at our schools and university and $18 million in our hospitals, including a new GP Superclinic.
“Labor is supporting growth in local economies through regional development grants of $54 million including $12.8 million to the Bendigo theatre project.
“Bendigo and the region will also be the beneficiary of Labor’s investment in infrastructure projects including $3.2 billion toward the Victorian Regional Rail Link and an initial $147.5 million in Bendigo for the National Broadband Network.
“Supporting increased productivity and securing good jobs is central to the wellbeing of the region. Labor has invested $714.5 million for the Thales Bushmaster, new Hawkei defence manufacturing project and Australian Defence Apparel contracts to maintain vital skills and employment in the area.
“Bendigo has benefitted from Labor’s determination to build a fair society. Abolishing Work Choices and helping families make ends meet by increasing the tax free threshold to $18,200 are just two ways Labor has improved fairness for all Australians.
“I look forward to working with the central Victorian and Macedon Ranges communities
to make the electorate of Bendigo an even better place to live,” Ms Chesters said.
