Federal Member for Bendigo, Lisa Chesters is demanding the Federal Liberal Government to urgently increase LaTrobe University funding or allow them to access the JobKeeper scheme.
“It is devastating to learn that Latrobe University will cut jobs because of the COVID-19 pandemic,” Chesters said.
“These cuts could have been avoided and local jobs could be saved.
Latrobe University sent an email to staff this week to advise them of further voluntary redundancies and job losses.
Vice-Chancellor John Dewar also informed staff that the university is facing a loss of $33 million $63 million this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
“I blame the Federal Liberal Government for cutting universities out of accessing the Job Keeper scheme,” Chesters said.
“Other local businesses and NFP organisations can access JobKeeper and as a result, have kept their workers employed.
“This is the Liberal Government’s fault. At every turn, they have actively excluded universities from accessing JobKeeper and this is the result.
“It is our political leaders who put the university into this position, they should be assisting with saving jobs.
“It’s one of the dumbest moves by this Federal Liberal Government.
“On the other side of the COVID-19 pandemic we will need universities like Bendigo’s LaTrobe to train the skilled workers we need to lead our local economy and country out of this economic crisis.
“We cannot afford any more jobs at the Bendigo campus.”
