Lisa Chesters supports Refugee Week

Federal Member for Bendigo, Lisa Chesters is encouraging Central Victorians to celebrate diversity, this World Refugee Day.

“Today is world refugee day which is a great reminder that there are a number of ways residents across the Bendigo electorate can show their support to refugees in our own backyard,” Chesters said.

Bendigo’s Karen community are running a campaign called ‘Buy a Brick’, asking residents and businesses to band together and donate to help build a three bedroom temporary home for refugee families who are resettling in Bendigo.

Refugees would stay there for an initial period to enable them to settle in and start to learn about Australian culture, before moving out into private rental to the broader community.

“These people are navigating paths to employment, healthcare, access to food, and most importantly housing and shelter, which can be a struggle, particularly when you know little English.

“This refugee home would give them a safe and homely space when they first arrive, offering them priceless connections with other Karen Community members and organisations like Bendigo Community Health.

“This is such a worthwhile campaign and something that I’ve seen develop over time, that’s why this week I’m making the pledge to buy 10 bricks,” Chesters said.

The Karen community are also looking for English teachers for as little as one hour a week.

“If you’re interested in volunteering, this is a great way to help newer members in our community integrate and contribute.

“Many people have moved to Greater Bendigo and enrich the region by sharing their culture,” Chesters said.
