The ATO have confirmed it will close 10 regional offices around Australia, including Bendigo, due to the Abbott Government’s Budget cuts.
Federal Member for Bendigo, Lisa Chesters MP, said the closure will leave eight staff in the Bendigo office with an uncertain future.
“The ATO flagged its intention to close 10 regional offices around Australia in January in the Draft Regional Service Delivery Project report.
“The Liberal Government’s Budget sealed the fate of the Bendigo office with widespread job cuts at the ATO.
"Decisions like these are a huge blow for regional communities and the families involved.
“Eight staff and countless small businesses will be affected by this decision.”
Ms Chesters said it put into question Tony Abbott’s commitment to regional Australia.
“Since the Government came into power, we have seen job cuts at the Bendigo Australia Post, Centrelink, AEMI and the ATO office.
“How many more public sector jobs will Tony Abbott and his Coalition Government cut?
"For the central Victorian economy to be strong, we need public sector jobs.
"Sacking workers, more taxes, more cuts, more broken promises for Bendigo and central Victorians - that is Tony Abbott’s first Budget.”
