NDIS set to rollout to Bendigo and Central Victoria

Federal Member for Bendigo, Lisa Chesters MP was proud to join Victorian Labor Premier Daniel Andrews at Parliament House today for the signing of the historic bilateral agreement with the Federal Government to rollout the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) in Victoria.

The NDIS will be rolled out gradually across Victoria with a planned start date of 1 May 2017 for Greater Bendigo, Loddon, Macedon Ranges and Mount Alexander.

“It’s very exciting to finally have a date for Bendigo, Mount Alexander and the Macedon Ranges regions. I acknowledge it’s a little later than we had first hoped but Bendigo and Central Victoria are listed for Year One NDIS rollout,” she said.

“I must acknowledge the hard work of our local State MPs, Jacinta Allan MP, Maree Edwards MP and Mary-Ann Thomas MP as the real movement in the negotiations between the State and Federal Government only occurred after the election of the Andrews Labor Government.

“Prior to the Federal election, Federal Labor had listed Bendigo and Central Victoria in the first stage of the NDIS roll-out. Then, nothing until the election of the Andrews Labor Victorian Government.

“Here in the electorate of Bendigo about 3400 local people with a disability will get extra support and have more choice over how they receive that support.

“The current system of disability care is totally broken.

“Since becoming the local Federal member I’ve learnt first-hand of the challenges disability services workers currently face and the sector needs to support people with a disability better,” she said.

“I also know how important an early rollout of the NDIS is for Bendigo and our people with a disability and their families, many of whom are in desperate need of respite, support and choice.

“Once fully rolled out, the NDIS will see the end of rationed services and waitlists for people with disability and their families.

Following today’s announcement, Lisa Chesters MP is looking forward to next week’s meeting of the Bendigo Disability Housing Working Group and the opportunities that will come with this announcement.
