Federal member for Bendigo, Lisa Chesters, welcomes the Federal Governments’ continued commitment to the Bendigo manufactured Thales Australia’s Hawkei Light Protected Vehicle.
"This contract helps secure 170 directly employed Bendigo Thales jobs and hundreds of supply chain jobs.
“After two years of indecision, late last year the Abbott/Turnbull Government finally reached the same conclusion that Labor did in 2013 - that the Hawkei is the best vehicle for the job and awarded this vital contract to Bendigo Thales.
“Thales Australia’s Bushmaster and Hawkei demonstrate that Australian defence industry can produce not only world-class equipment for the Australian Defence Force, but also for a growing export market.
“It’s disappointing the Liberal Government did not commit to more defence manufacturing contracts like Hawkei in the 2016 Defence White Paper released today
“Today, the Liberal Government missed another opportunity to commit to the Australian Manufacturing Industry and secure Australian Defence manufacturing jobs.
“These projects have a large price tag. Australia's new fleet of 12 submarines will cost at least $50 billion just to build, the Turnbull Government's Defence white paper has revealed.
“Big spends like this should go toward securing and creating Australian jobs. For such a big budget spend, Australian’s expect Australian industry and jobs,” Ms Chesters said.
