The Federal Member for Bendigo, Lisa Chesters, today welcomed comments by the Assistant Defence Minister, Stuart Robert, regarding the Thales’ Hawkei project.
Ms Chesters said she was pleased to finally hear some positive comments from the Abbott Government on the future of Thales in Bendigo. Ms Chesters noted Mr Robert’ comments that “there is a cause to be confident for the Hawkei” will be welcomed by Thales workers and the wider Bendigo community.
“Supporting local manufacturing and lobbying for a defence contract for the Hawkei protected mobility vehicle are key parts of my first term agenda,” Ms Chesters said.
“Large manufacturing contracts provide employment not only for workers in the company involved, but also provide valuable flow on opportunities for small local businesses to supply components and services.”
“A large contract like the Hawkei project will bring benefits to the whole community, and I will be working hard to ensure the Abbott Government does not ignore Bendigo and the outstanding vehicles that Thales has proven it can produce.”
“I am pleased the Assistant Defence Minister is taking the time to inspect the testing of the Hawkei vehicle, and I urge him to make a commitment to local manufacturing and work with me to secure this project for Bendigo,” Ms Chesters said.
“I look forward to working with the Minister to secure this vital contract for Bendigo.”
