Young people encouraged to apply for sport grants

CALLING all budding Joel Selwoods, Glenn O’Sheas or Kristi Harrowers, the latest round of Local Sporting Champion Grants is closing soon.

Federal Member for Bendigo, Lisa Chesters, said young sport stars had until February 28 to get their application in for this round of funding.

“The grants are a fantastic scheme to help young people aged 12 to 18 meet the significant cost associated with participation at an official national sporting competition,” she said.

“It’s particularly hard for people from regional areas to compete in major championships. Not only is there the cost of travel to and from competitions, but also accommodation, uniforms and equipment.”

Grants of $500 for individuals and $3000 for teams are available.

Ms Chesters encouraged central Victoria’s young people to tap into the funding.

“Central Victoria has produced some world-class athletes over the years and hopefully these grants will assist the next generation of sporting champions,” she said.
