A $75million contract has been secured by Bendigo’s Thales factory to build 43 new Bushmasters for the New Zealand Defence Force.
Federal Member for Bendigo, Lisa Chesters has welcomed the news, congratulating Thales on their ongoing defence manufacturing.
“This is fantastic news for Thales and its staff,” Chesters said.
“The new contract is another example of Bendigo manufacturers making their mark on the world stage, importing to a number of countries including the Netherlands, Jamaica, Fiji, Japan and the UK.
The new Bushmasters will replace New Zealand’s ageing military trucks, Pinzgauer armoured vehicles.
Chesters said the contract was a huge tick of approval for Thales Bendigo.
“This is reward for the great job done by the men and women who work there,” Chesters said.
“Bushmasters had a proven legacy for saving lives.
“This contract secures jobs for many Central Victorians.
“This new export contract reinforces Thales’ position as top of the field in defence manufacturing.
“Thales is an important part of the Bendigo economy.
“Contracts like this not only secure direct jobs at Thales and its suppliers, but for Bendigo’s economy as a whole, of which defence manufacturing is a major component.”
“Ensuring that more manufacturing jobs stay in the Bendigo region for many years to come is one of my top priorities,” Chesters said.
