Around 3500 people with a disability, their families and carers in the Bendigo electorate will benefit from DisabilityCare Australia, the National Disability Insurance Scheme, as the result of the significant agreement reached between the Australian and Victorian Governments.
Lisa Chesters, Labor Candidate for Bendigo, welcomed the announcement, saying that this agreement meant DisabilityCare Australia will be rolled out across Victoria by 2019.
“DisabilityCare Australia will give people in the Bendigo electorate peace of mind, knowing that if they have, or acquire, a disability or have a child with a disability needing daily care and support, they will get the support they need when they need it,” Ms Chesters said.
“I know from meeting with many of these people, their families and the organisations that currently work with them how important this reform is.”
Under the agreement reached today:
• By 2019-20, the Victorian Government will provide an estimated $2.5 billion to cover all people in Victoria. This contribution was determined using the benchmark set by New South Wales in the agreement reached with the Commonwealth in December 2012. This will contribute to the cost of care and support for people with disability.
• By 2019-20, the Commonwealth Government will contribute around $2.6 billion to the scheme for Victorians. This will be around 51 percent of scheme costs. In addition, having reached agreement on broader changes in the roles and responsibilities of both governments for people aged 65 and over, the Commonwealth will cover the full cost of people who turn 65 and choose to remain in the scheme.
Lisa Chesters said the historic agreement for a full scheme builds on the agreement to launch DisabilityCare in Victoria from the middle of this year.
“DisabilityCare Australia will start in Victoria in July this year for around 5,000 people with a disability living in the Barwon region, including Geelong. Other eligible Victorian residents will start entering the scheme from July 2016.
“We will progressively roll out DisabilityCare Australia in Victoria so that, by July 2019, all eligible residents will be covered.
“The Australian Government has also established the DisabilityCare Australia agency, which is on the ground in Victoria preparing for launch.”
