Morrison and Hunt must fund hospitals to aid reopening

Federal Member for Bendigo, Lisa Chesters has today condemned Scott Morrison for ruling out providing additional Commonwealth public hospital funding to help deal with the ongoing COVID-19 response.

“We are entering the most critical phase of the COVID-19 pandemic response for our hospital systems. We simply can’t afford to leave our hospitals without the resources they need.”

“This will be one of the greatest strains on our hospital system in modern times and as usual, Scott Morrison is simply missing in action,” said Ms Chesters.

While the Commonwealth has provided additional support over the initial stages of this pandemic paying for 50 per cent of additional expenditure, this pandemic is far from over.

The states are right to call for this to continue until 2023, given the scale of the crisis our public hospitals could face.

“Public hospital funding should be an equal partnership between State and Federal Governments, but this Federal Liberal Government is not prepared to continue to pay its fair share,” Ms Chesters said.

Locals want to know that the Bendigo Hospital and hospitals across central Victoria have the funding they need to staff up, if needed.

“Our Central Victorian health workers are exhausted. At the very least, the Federal Government should fund our health services properly so they can focus on the health crisis and not a funding crisis.”

Australians deserve better. They deserve a government committed to funding public hospitals. They deserve a government on their side.
