Federal Member for Bendigo, Lisa Chesters MP will meet local veterinary nursing students at Bendigo Tafe today to discuss their inclusion in the Australian Apprenticeship Priority List.

It’s part of the Federal Labor Government’s move to support apprentices and address widespread skills shortages by expanding a list of priority occupations from 77 to 111.

The Australian Apprenticeships Priority List identifies priority occupations for the Australian Apprenticeships Incentive System.

Veterinary Nurses, Electronic Equipment Trades Workers, Screen Printers, Swimming Coaches and Travel Consultants are some of the new occupations to be added to the list.

This will increase the number of occupations eligible for additional support, including up to $5,000 in direct payments to apprentices, and a wage subsidy of up to $15,000 for employers.

Quotes Attributable to Member for Bendigo, Lisa Chesters

"This announcement is great workers and employers across the region.

“It means more workers will have access to direct funding and support to help complete their training, whilst more employers will have access to subsidies to take on extra apprentices and trainees to help fill staffing gaps.

“Employers across the Bendigo electorate often tell me it’s hard to find well trained and qualified staff.

“The widespread skill shortage is more than just a series of missed opportunities, it poses one of the greatest economic challenges our region will face in decades.

“Targeting areas with current and emerging skills demand will ensure apprentices have secure employment for years to come and fill urgently needed skills vacancies.”
